This year Spring is reluctantly rounding the corner. The weather has been much chillier than usual, but the flowers are in bloom, and we are minutes away from being able to dip into the sea.
Being on the water, in the water and near the water are 3 of my favorite things. Every year I tell myself that I will continue to swim all year round. I have made promises that I have broken faithfully year in, year out, I am ashamed to say. There is nothing like the feeling of being in the water.
I am a slow-enterer. I don’t dive, I don’t jump, I slowly slip in. I find it interesting how we all have our own distinctive ways of entering the water, and we barely ever stray from that “way”. There are the jumpers, divers, cannonballers, all who I have huge admiration for. I am that more timid, cautious, painfully slow toe-dipping sort that drives everyone mad. My family has all the patience in the world and allows me the prerequisite ten minutes to make my way into the water. That said, once I am in, it’s practically impossible to get me out. So, my favorite way of enjoying the water is being in it.
In order to get in it, we love to go out on our little boat. I know that some love beaches, but I have never been good at sitting or lying still for long so the boat is the perfect solution for us. Speaking of boating, an amazing weekend has just passed with the Regata di Primavera in the bay of Portofino. What a spectacle it was to behold the beautiful boats as they danced in the bay of Portofino. The event was hosted by the Italian Yacht Club. It was an honor for us to host the participants and we congratulate them on their stunning victory!
If you love to lounge on the beach, the ultimate place to do that is the bay of Paraggi in Santa Margherita. The super chic beach clubs will make sure you are well fed, watered, shaded and pampered. A swim in that bay is unforgettable. If you don’t want to shell out the euros, you can also enter from the free beach, or jump in from the bay of Niasca. This is as close as I have ever been to heaven.
San Michele di Pagana is another beautiful old beach town in Rapallo. Even during the winter, you can side up to the sea (or be braver than me, and just jump right in!) and take in the sun as you enjoy a meal at one of the little outdoor bars. For a girl who grew up in Canada, the practice of eating outside in winter is a dream come true. A seafood platter and a glass of vermentino on that beach is my favorite way to sweeten any day.
The coast is that tiny space that divides water from land. We are drawn to it, mesmerized by it. I would even go as far to say that we are spellbound by it. How else would you describe what comes over us when we sink into the water and enter that other realm, down below? How would you describe that sensation? And what about the sensation that comes over us, as we careen along the water’s surface? People flock to the coast to experience these feelings. The summer brings people from all over the world to fill up the beaches, to gaze at and to dance on the water.
The Italian coastline, with its irresistible charm, draws sea lovers from every corner of the globe.
